Housing Wanted

So searching craigslist for the past month I have been waiting to find a post like this.

Housemates should meet this criteria:
• Stay up late
• Occasionally listen to loud music
• Like to have parties and drink in the home
• No pets; no drugs

So far no results.

Digital Photography

"Now, she is trying to embed a bit of the photographer in the picture, too. The patterns in the iris - the colored part of the eye - are at least as distinctive as a person's fingerprint. With money from the Air Force, Professor Fridrich is designing a camera that takes two pictures at once: one though the camera lens, and a smaller one of the photographer's iris. The iris image along with the time and place of the photo session would then be compressed, encrypted and instantly hidden within the larger picture just taken." http://www.nytimes.com/2004/07/22/technology/circuits/22next.html

Who does this help, certainly not the photographer. I say this is another step towards a 1984 future.

Very skeptical of this, Farid says in the article above that his process fails on jpegs compressed at or > 90% quality. I think Adobe and other image processing tools will embed encrypted data spread throughout the image to tag modified images. Just by changing compression or color algorithms would make Farid's program fail.

cars

So I am debating on whether or not I need to purchase a new car. The jeep seems to be having some minor issues and definitely not optimal for my daily 90 mile drive. I am primarily looking at two vehicles; the Toyota Prius and the 2004.5 Volvo S40. I have test drove both now and the Volvo is far superior. The Prius is just convincing because of its fuel efficiency.

I am also emotionally tied to the jeep, but with its 15mpg and gas prices averaging 2.30/gallon the relationship may not last.

Where's Sammy G

I am safe and in California. I have been struggling over the past few weeks on where I want to live; in the city which requires a 45 minute commute to and from work or in suburbia where I can bike to work. I believe I have finally decided on Bernal Heights, which is south of the Mission district in San Francisco. The next hurdle is finding a location where Ben and myself can move into.

Over the weekend my glasses broke so I was happy to have the opportunity to buy some new frames. I got two pair and both are very sleek, one frame is French made and the other is Swiss made! I am working on a write up about my recent trip to Ireland that will include select photo’s from the trip.

It is interesting being away from WPI and my friend base. I feel like I have now merged into a separate life I have been maintaining over the past two years in California. I do miss some folks from back East and a few have been getting in contact with me which is nice.
